Must read 🏆

Amazing! I laughed from top to bottom, basked in the great story arc, revelled in the characterization. Oh, this one is a delight. I read it from top to bottom in a day, which is something that doesn’t happen often. I tend to have three or more books on rotation, and while my turnaround is fast, it’s rare for me to find a story that keeps me engaged for a couple of hours. The Temptation Project: Purgatory Problems (TTP from now on) did just that. Hat tip to White: her grasp on plot and characterization is superb. Wow. First of all, TTP is part of a trilogy, according to GoodReads, and from the very first paragraph onward, White doesn’t pull any punches. Chapter one, I had no clue about Lucifer or Lilith’s interpretations, and they became crystal clear within a paragraph or two. Their dynamics? Same. That’s talent. That’s a great writing style. A couple of strokes paint the whole picture, without info dumping on readers, old and new alike. There’s a nice balance between dialogue and prose, the grammar is on point. Tarantula is an excellent main character, and the humorous take enhances both the characterization and the story arc. Same goes for the supporting cast of characters: I found myself snickering at poor Lucifer (‘Lilith, if you don’t stop immediately, [..] DEVIL’S DAMNATION!’ while being zapped in the pool? Amazing!] and at Lilith’s antics. They’re delightful, so much I’ll be looking for the other two books in the series as soon as I’m done typing this up.

STORYLINE: THERE IS DISRUPTION IN THE UNIVERSE.

Because of Lilith’s relentless pursuit, the demon Tarantula is forced to hide in The Between, a vaporous space surrounding the earth. As usual, Beelzebub has ulterior motives for sending her to that location. The Between is where Purgatory exists; the stopover for billions of souls not yet assigned to eternal placement in either Hell or The Above. His mandate to her: study these Indeterminates and devise a strategy to siphon off the souls that belong in Hell.

In the midst of this impossible undertaking, Tarantula learns that Beelzebub has been accused of high treason and is imprisoned by Lucifer’s Fire Guard. This shocking news sparks a thorny alliance within an adversarial group of demons and angels. Can they warn Lucifer of the scheme involving The Indeterminates before Beelzebub is destroyed and war breaks out between Hell and The Above?
